THEATRE
WOMEN AT WORK
A transformative evening of works-in-progress plays by BIPOC femme writers
Each artist is in a different stage of development, thus calling on a variety of needs ranging from hearing the work to opening up audience feedback or questions. As we consistently overcome extreme obstacles in a misogynistic society, the evening is constructed to provide creative and safe space for writers to nurture and grow their work. Unstoppable and in Solidarity.
MATRIARCH
She's Wide Awake Shining Light
An evening of theatre that represents the demand for justice for women. MATRIACH embodies an unorthodox exploration of the roles women play in a patriarchal society and the urgent need to transform the current dynamic.
In a time where patriarchy continues to oppress matriarchal roles through all color lines, this powerful work speaks to the critical call for women in our society to be honored and respected. Some of Los Angeles’ most prominent writers and performers unite to bring you a night that will empower, provoke and uplift
your spirit.
This production has been running since 2014, and the latest 2021 production featured an all-star line up complete with theatre legends and literary giants.
A RECORD OF LIGHT
“You don’t come out of this life alive…
to know your life’s purpose is to dare to go where it leads.”
A RECORD OF LIGHT is about the Akashic Records (complete sacred knowledge of all human experience) being housed, in secret, in downtown's The Last Bookstore.
Orelia Key, a woman whose spirit moves faster than her body can handle, is determined to access it.
On this mission, she encounters denizens of the bookstore - analog people - who in a world of technology, discover the link between body and the substance of the soul.
JUANA MARIA
A New Performance Work by Roger Q. Mason
Director by Michael Alverz
May 25 and June 1, 2025
Produced by Outside In Theatre and Skylight Theatre Company in association with The Roots & Wings Project
West of the West Coast lies the isolated St. Nicolas Island where a young indigenous woman lived for almost two decades without human contact. And then she was "rescued" in 1853 by an American sailor with a bounty.
After living as an exotic at the Santa Barbara Mission for seven weeks, rich food, fleeting fame, and the excess of the West killed her. This is a dirge for her last two months alive. Juana Maria is a recipient of the 2024 Ojai Playwright Conference Fall Playwright Residency.
THE JOY RIDE
Written and Directed by Jesse Bliss
Through a reckoning comes the freedom journey...
Four dear friends gather to ride out together, but quickly realize they each have much to reckon with. How, in a time of deep grief, do they dare to claim joy? In a world of absolute unrest, solace is found in each other.
This touring production is delivered out of a vintage convertible.
TREE OF FIRE
When the face of death illuminates the truth of life...
TREE OF FIRE is a play written and directed by RAW Founder/Creative Director Jesse Bliss that has been on its journey since 2009. Excerpts of the piece have been performed at UCLA, Theatre of Note and S.P.A.R.C. @ The Old Jail in Venice, and a full staged reading was presented at the former Lincoln Heights Jail. The play had recently had a staged reading at Occidental College, UC Santa Cruz and a full run at The Rosenthal Theater at Inner-City Arts.
When a Magnolia tree catches fire in an aged and ominous women’s prison, three female inmates forgotten and left to perish are jolted as their lives are threatened, into memories of their past that inform the truth of their souls and the urgent need to expose the inhumanity of the prison to the world.
